C.A.R.E.S. Coordinator
The Core Team of the C.A.R.E.S. Coalition (C.A.R.E.S),
Taos, NM, is seeking applications from qualified candidates
for the position of Coordinator. The successful candidate
will assume administrative responsibilities for C.A.R.E.S.
The purpose of the position will be to provide professional
leadership and assistance to the C.A.R.E.S coalition
in making C.A.R.E.S an effective, viable organization;
to administer the implementation of Core Team policies
and plans toward the accomplishment of C.A.R.E.S goals;
and to advocate for and address comprehensive community
health issues in the most holistic sense.
An important feature of the coalitions structure
is the Core Teams oversight roleguiding
the coalitions direction and bringing recommendations
to full coalition meetings. C.A.R.E.S. by-laws define
a consensus model of decision making and a commitment
to a coalition that represents the ethnic, economic,
and geographic diversity of our county.
Applicants for the Coordinator must possess the skills
and background deemed essential to manage and direct
all aspects of the Coalition.
About C.A.R.E.S
Taos C.A.R.E.S. is a comprehensive county-wide health
coalition in Taos County that assesses community needs
and strengths, particularly focusing on 6 community
identified priorities: Substance Abuse, Violence, Poverty,
Access to Health Care, Teen Pregnancy and Obesity/Nutrition.Taos
CARES mission is to unite community efforts and coordinate
resources that will enhance the health and well being
of area residents.
C.A.R.E.S. creates linkages through convening, informing,
planning, and analyzing data, needs and gaps. Members
work together sharing data, planning, and coordinating
efforts and partnerships or collaborations leading to
increased system capacity to create positive Systems
Changes, as well as short and long-term health improvements.
C.A.R.E.S. governance structure includes a Core Team
that serves to monitor Coalition progress and alignment
with mission, vision, and goals
C.A.R.E.S. holds regular meetings, collects and disseminates
data, and educates the community regarding announcements
of activities and other information pertinent to local
issues and concerns. Decisions at Coalition meetings are
based on group presentation of data or information and
discussion of issues followed by prioritization processes.
By-laws were revised in 2003 after recommendations were
made by the Core Team and a vote was taken at a full Coalition
meeting.
Position Overview
The C.A.R.E.S. Coordinator performs a variety of duties
to ensure the development, execution, and continuous
quality improvement of coalition strategies to foster
direct systems change. This position will help design
and implement a policy and publiceducation plan that
integrates key constituents and decision-makers. Optimal
candidates will be able to equally; 1) exhibit leadership
and "big-picture" thinking commencing community strategies
2) demonstrate detailed oriented preparation and implementation.
Scope of work includes:
- Ongoing CORE Team and Coalition Development. Initially through the process of a facilitated retreat.
- Work with the CORE Team to accomplish scope of work as outlined in the New Mexico Department of Health Community Health Improvement contract and schedule/attend meetings as needed.
- Attend required state DOH/CHI meetings or make sure that a CARES rep. attends. Attend other community meetings as needed
- Monitor C.A.R.E.S. listserve and maintain library
- Fulfill deliverables per CHI contract and submit monthly reports
- Monthly CARES meetings: schedule the Kit Carson space; send out agenda; set up/take down for the meeting; make sure that CORE team has appointed a facilitator; take minutes; email out announcements and minutes after the meetings.
Desired skills and Talents for the Coordinator
- Proven experience and success in raising funds from foundations and other potential contributors
- Strong administrative and organizational skills.
- Experience with Boards and Advisory bodies.
- Ability to work effectively with community leaders including executives of other charitable organizations.
- Self-disciplined, self-starting style, accustomed to working without supervision but capable of supervising and motivating others.
- A compelling commitment to the health sector generally and a strong desire to improve the quality of life in northern New Mexico.
- Capacity to help determine community needs and to evaluate projects with patience, open-mindedness, judgment and imagination.
- Ability to develop and execute presentations to diverse audience.
Specific Requirements
- Strong leadership skills
- Five years experience managing a community education project or campaign, and coalition development.
- Experience reviewing and researching health status data.
- Relevant experience writing and editing reports
- Fluency in written and spoken English (bilingual Spanish/bicultural skills beneficial and highly desirable).
- Awareness of and value for ethical communication, cultural proficiency, and differing viewpoints.
- Commitment to the vision, mission, and goals of C.A.R.E.S.
- Monthly reporting submitted to the DOH CHI contract monitor.
